Handicrafts

Textile came to be associated with social and ritualistic events from very early times. In the ancient books, the universe is referred to as a woven fabric. At least a part of the infinite variety of textile fabrics India produces seems to have been derived from the local contours of the countryside. In the West we have a colour belt of bright desert shades stretching from Rajasthan to Kutch. Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu we encounter more intricate designs in rich shades, but more orderly and regulated. The "Chikan" work of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh is a delicate and embroidery done in white thread on a white ground. This was introduced by Nur Jehan and may have been inspired by or based on some Turkish embroidery. Puri in Orissa is famous for its applique work. Here the method followed is to cut out pieces in various shapes and stitch them on a plain material to form different patterns. This applique work is used as beach and garden umbrellas, lamp shades, canopies for parties, tents for public gathering etc.
